DECODING AIR SUSPENSION: THE DETAILS WORKING PROCESS EXPLORED

air suspension working process

Customizing cars is more than just making them faster and stronger. For many people, it’s about showing off their creativity and personal style. Some prefer a simple approach, while others like to push the limits and make their cars stand out. When it comes to changing how a car looks on the outside, the first things enthusiasts usually focus on are the wheels and suspension. But getting the perfect look and feel isn’t as simple as it seems. That’s where air suspension comes in—it lets you easily adjust your car’s height with the push of a button. Even though it might seem straightforward, not everyone knows exactly how it works.

Today, we’re here to break it down for you and help you understand this cool technology.

THE BASICS

An air suspension system is a suspension type that permits drivers to change their vehicle’s ride height with a button press. Utilizing compressed air, these systems can elevate or lower vehicles and are adaptable for various uses.

Let’s explore exactly how was their working process.

STEP 1: AIR COMPRESSOR

The air compressor captivates atmospheric air and delivers it to the air reservoir/tank through filters. The air compressor is a crucial component of the suspension system which positioned under the vehicle frame or in the trunk. It captivates the atmospheric air into its in-built pump, then compresses it to an estimated 240 MPa pressure, then supply it to the air reservoir via filtration.

STEP 2: AIR RERVOIR/TANK

The suspension system comprises a storage unit called air reservoir/tank that holds pressurized air. This air reservoir can store air at a pressure of 150 psi or 1.03421 MPa. It also has a relief valve to let out excess air. After the compressor compresses the air, it goes into the air tank where it stays until you need it. Air tanks come in various shape and sizes to suit different uses. These tanks store the air until your system requires it, and when it run low, it refills from the air compressor.

STEP 3: AIR SUSPENSION MANAGEMENT

By now, your system will have collected enough air to adjust your vehicle’s height. But it can’t release this air until it gets a signal from your air suspension management system. Depending on your system, pressing a button or flipping a switch will send an electronic signal to your control valve block, allowing air to enter or exit from each air strut.

STEP 4: ELECTRIC CONTROL UNIT (ECU)

The ECU receives data, including the vehicle’s height, speed, and more. Through these data, the ECU understands the current air strut status and driving conditions. Based on preset settings, the ECU conveys instruction to control the vehicle’s suspension height and stiffness, adapting to different road conditions and driving needs.

STEP 5: CONTROL VALVE BLOCK

When the ECU sends out instructions, the control valve block is responsible for executing these adjustments by regulating the air pressure in the airbags, thereby controlling and adjusting the vehicle’s suspension system. Once you have flipped a switch or pushed a button on your air suspension management system, an electronic signal tells your valve block to open a specific valve to inflate or deflate decrease the air pressure in the airbags.

STEP 6: HEIGHT LEVEL SENSOR

Height control valves or sensors are positioned at each corner of a vehicle. Connected to the axle by an L-shaped linkage attached to the frame, these valves can detect tiny changes in the axle’s height relative to the frame. They also have an exhaust port to release air when the airbags deflate.

When extra loads are added to the vehicle, this HLS linkage swings and moves the valve as per the added loads to retain the suspension at a consistent height. Valve deflection lets air flow into the airbags through the supply line. As the airbags inflate, the suspension goes back to its usual position. This is due to the HLS linkage and valves return to their original positions, the airbags help maintain the correct ride height level.

In the meanwhile, when the vehicle’s load is removed, the axle goes back to its original position. Once the weight if off the axle, the airbags let out air through the vehicle’s exhaust port, allowing the HLS linkage to stay neutral. After the air is released, the exhaust port closes, keeping the remaining air in the bags to maintain the correct riding height.

STEP 7: AIR STRUTS

Finally, the air reaches the air struts. These struts are equipped with air bladders (airbags) rather than traditional springs. These airbags inflate and deflate to adjust your vehicle’s height. They are designed for specific vehicles and typically do not need any modifications for installation.

Here’s all you need to understand about an air suspension system. Offering remarkable versatility, this setup is perfect for various road conditions and vehicle types. It’s currently one of the most popular car modifications. With its simple customization, enhanced shock absorption and improved fuel efficiency, this suspension system is a fantastic upgrade for your vehicle.
