ECAS (Electronic Controlled Air Suspension)

The Electronic Suspension System (ESS) marks a significant advancement in chassis technology. Leveraging electronic capabilities and innovative bellow technology, ESS enhances safety, comfort and delivers a more dynamic driving experience. By automatically adjusting damper and suspension levels, as well as vehicle height, ESS adapts seamlessly to varying driving conditions and load changes.

ECAS offers adjustable-height suspension suitable for both on-road and off-road scenarios, with five suspension settings: Loading, Highway, Standard, Off-Road and Off-Road Extended, each catering to specific height requirements. Speed and undercarriage sensors regulate height automatically, though a manual ride height switch empowers the driver with suspension control. Notably, Loading and Off-Road settings are accessible at speeds typically below 35 miles per hour (56km/h), while the Highway setting is engaged automatically when the vehicle surpasses 50 miles per hour (80km/h) for over 30 seconds. Unlike traditional mechanical spring systems, which adjust deflection in response to load, ECAS allows for independent height adjustment regardless of load, achieved by regulating air spring pressure.

These air springs offer a smooth ride and the flexibility to raise or lower the vehicle body for off-road clearance or high-speed road driving. The inclusion of LoadSafe, a complementary system, further enhances load management and safety for light commercial vehicles equipped with air springs.

  • Intelligent Off-Road Adaptability: ECAS combines air suspension with advanced off-road systems, automatically adjusting the suspension intelligently based on driving scenarios. This technology enables Range Rover to excel in highly challenging terrains, including rock crawling, mud and ruts, snow, and more.

  • Multi-Scenario Adaptation: The system not only adapts to common off-road conditions but also provides various mode selections based on different terrains, such as general driving, grass, gravel, snow, mud, ruts, and sand. This gives drivers the confidence to drive comfortably in various challenging environments.

  • Real-Time Adjustment: The system not only predicts adjustments but also has real-time response capabilities. This means that during the vehicle’s journey, the system continuously optimizes suspension settings to ensure drivers always enjoy optimal off-road performance.

  • Professional Off-Road Modes: In addition to general driving scenarios, the system has professional off-road modes, such as rock crawling and mud. These modes, through fine-tuned adjustments to the suspension, differentials, and engine output, allow Range Rover to demonstrate excellent off-road capabilities in highly challenging terrains.

ROLLS ROYCE — Luxury and Ultimate Comfort

Planar Suspension System

Rolls Royce developed the Planar Suspension System, which addresses the distinction between mass and weight. Mass refers to the amount of matter an object contains, while weight is a measure of the gravitational force acting on the object. Mass remains constant as an intrinsic property, whereas weight varies depending on gravitational force.

Rolls Royce’s approach involved adding mass to the suspension system by integrating a damper unit into the existing upper wishbone. This addition, represented by the claw-type unit (in purple) and bum-stoppers (in yellow), serves to absorb high-frequency vibrations. This strategic addition of mass is essential for handling small bumps, as air shocks alone may not effectively absorb such vibrations, transmitting them through wheels, tires and suspension components.

While air suspension systems excel at navigating large potholes and obstacles, they may struggle with smaller undulations. The incorporation of the damper unit and rubber bump stops significantly reduces resistance to force, effectively eliminating high-frequency vibrations caused by minor imperfections that would typically affect the upper wishbone.

Lastly, the air suspension proves highly adept at absorbing bumps, particularly when equipped with predictive systems that anticipate road conditions, such as Rolls-Royce’s Flagbearer system.

This simplicity of the innovation behind the Planar Suspension System underscores the profound impact that even minor advancements can have. Top of Form

  • Stereo Camera System: Planar Suspension is equipped with an advanced stereo camera system that adjusts the suspension based on real-time road conditions. Leveraging the feedback from these cameras, the system actively perceives the road ahead, making timely and precise adjustments.

  • Active Suspension Hardness Adjustment: Using information from the front camera, the system can actively adjust the suspension hardness of each wheel during the driving process. This active adjustment not only helps reduce bumps and vibrations but also ensures consistent outstanding comfort under different road conditions.

  • Pinnacle Experience in Luxury Cars: This system focuses on providing outstanding driving comfort, especially in the luxury car segment. Through intelligent suspension adjustments, this system creates a softer and smoother driving experience for both the driver and passengers, highlighting ROLLS-ROYCE’s ultimate pursuit of comfort.

  • Intelligent Learning Function: The system has intelligent learning capabilities. By analyzing the driver’s habits and behaviors, it gradually optimizes suspension settings, providing a more personalized and driver-expected driving experience. This personalized intelligent adjustment ensures that each drive better meets the driver’s needs.

Each automotive brand, through uniquely and meticulously designed air suspension systems, provides drivers with a distinctive driving experience. Choosing a car model with an air suspension system optimizes driving dynamics and enhances the overall vehicle performance. However, the differences between different brands make each model unique, catering to the needs of diverse drivers. In the future, with continuous technological advancements, we can expect to see more innovative air suspension systems, bringing even more outstanding driving experiences for drivers.

By thoroughly understanding the air suspension systems of each brand, we gain a better understanding of the unique pursuits of comfort and performance by automobile manufacturers. Choosing a car is not just about purchasing a means of transportation; it’s also about embracing a unique lifestyle. The driving experience presented by each brand is a manifestation of brand philosophy and technological innovation, offering consumers more choices.
